Nevada’s Walker Lake might look like a peaceful spot where you can stop and enjoy the wonders of the American Southwest. Most of the time that’s true, except during the summer. You don’t want to be there during the summer.
Aside from the oppressive heat, every summer Walker Lake becomes invested with hundreds of thousands orb-weaving spiders. The peaceful lake literally become a spider heaven. It’s not for the faint of heart.
Here is a peaceful view of the lake. Walker Lake is all the remains of an ancient inland ocean that used to cover almost all of what is today Nevada.
From here it’s breathtaking, and the interstate runs right by it. You might be tempted to pull over and get out to take a look.
But if it’s the summer you better just keep on driving, otherwise you’ll be greeted by the sight of hundreds of thousands of orb-weaving spiders.
During the summer months they’re everywhere along the lake.
The spider population around the lake explodes during the warmer months because of the abundance of food to be found.
If you’re not expecting it, and just thought you’d take some pictures of the lake, you’ll be very startled indeed.
Is that snow on that bush? Oh no nevermind, it’s just hundreds of spiders. Nevermind.
Luckily these kind of spiders don’t attack and aren’t poisenous to humans. They prefer to feast on flies and other small insects. Still though, that doesn’t make the sight of them any less freaky.
Check out this video walk though of the spider infestation along Walker Lake.
Warning. It will give you goosebumps (and not the good kind).
This is just a horror film waiting to happen. Lucky for us, the spider population only booms during the summer months, and then sharply declines once temperatures drop in the fall.
