The coolest art can often be the most simple. Well, at least it seems simple at first glance.

Artist João Carvalho created these awesome sketches that mess with viewers’ perceptions with optical illusions. Normally, we think of sketch art as simple and straightforward — the sort of “bare-bones” of artistic depiction. Carvalho’s work goes to show how artists can take simple techniques like shading and use them for something new and creative. 

It looks like Scooby-Doo is coming right off the page!

Jerry the Mouse. These sketches are so spot on.

Let’s just say it took a steady hand to finish this particular sketch.

This one is insane. I can’t believe that this piece of paper is laying flat.

The sketch is perfect. It is drawn to look like the pen created a ripple in the paper.

This is my favorite one. I don’t know how he did this, but this is an incredible sketch.

It looks like Pikachu is actually floating above the paper.
